Southern Right Whale
The endangered Southern Right Whale holds a special place in Australian conservation history, moving from the brink of extinction during the whaling era to a steady, though still vulnerable, number. The massive baleen whale is known for its slow-swimming habits, high curiosity, and distinct preference for shallow coastal bays. Eubalaena australis adults average 14-18 metres in length, and can weigh an astonishing 80-100 tonnes.
Lifting their massive tail flukes straight up out of the water, the whale catches the wind to 'sail' backwards through the water. They possess two completely separate blowholes, creating a highly distinct, V-shaped spray of vapour when they surface to breathe.
