Long Snout Seahorse
Australia's southern temperate coastal waters host a massive array of Seahorse relatives and some of the largest species. Not being strong swimmers, they rely heavily on structured, sheltered environments of sea grass and coral where they can anchor themselves against currents.
An X-ray view highlights the Long Snout Seahorse's interlocking bony plates and rings that case its entire body, instead of scales, and its segmented tail skeleton.
